Dental restorations are used to bring teeth that are cracked, chipped, misshapen, worn out, etc. back to their original form. Lately, most dentists around the world only use ceramic restorations as they offer several advantages that their alternatives don't. This being said, further advancements in the field of dentistry have allowed dentists to develop a faster and more effective method of fabricating restorations. It is called Chairside Economical Restoration using Esthetic Ceramic, or CEREC.
What is CEREC?
CEREC is an advanced means of fabricating ceramic restorations, such as crowns, veneers, etc. using CAD/CAM technology. Using this, we can make restorations in a matter of a few minutes and have them bonded to the teeth on the same day the patient visits the dentist for the first consultation. This luxury isn't available in the case of conventional teeth restorations as it could take up to two weeks to get a simple restoration.
How are CEREC restorations made?
When you visit our practice for the initial consultation, we would conduct a thorough screening procedure to understand the severity of the condition. Based on the observations, we would determine the candidacy for the restorations. Next, we would scan the teeth using a hand-held digital scanning system. The images rendered by this appliance would be displayed on a computer screen where both the patient and dentist can view the tooth from multiple angles and in better detail.
The data from the scans will be sent to a computer-aided milling (CAM) machine. The machine mills out the restoration to precision from a small block of dental-grade ceramic material. The process hardly takes a few minutes, during which you can relax in the comfort of our practice. Prior to bonding the restoration, it will have to be etched to roughen the surface. We use high-quality dental adhesives to bond the restoration to the tooth, after which it will be hardened using curing light.
Advantages of CEREC crowns
CEREC restorations can be fabricated in a very short span of time. This can save you a lot of time and effort.
CEREC restorations are highly precise in terms of fit and comfort. They will be milled to perfection by the computer-backed machine.
CEREC crowns are life-like. Their shape, color, texture, luster, etc. can be customized to match that of the natural teeth.
CEREC restorations are usually longer lasting. They offer excellent durability and longevity.
The process of getting a CEREC crown is simpler compared to the conventional method. It is technologically quite advanced as well.
